About the Golf Club
Preface
When, some two years ago, the President asked if I would be interested
in compiling the history of Lightcliffe Golf Club, I recalled that shortly
after joining the club in the late 1970’s I was shown a leather suit case
which held the minutes of Board meetings going back to 1907 when
the club was formed. At the time of the club’s jubilee in 1957,
the Brighouse Echo recorded that minute book number 1 was in excellent
condition and a prized possession of the club. In November 1973 it was
recorded that all minute books were in being except 1933–1939. Alas
to-day the leather suitcase and its treasured contents are nowhere to be
found. Exhaustive searches and discussions with past Presidents and
Secretaries have failed to reveal the suitcase, nor can the minutes of
1975 to 1981 be located. However, having committed myself, the
writing had to proceed. Initially, old copies of the Brighouse Echo were
trawled for recordings of the club’s activities. I am very grateful to
Jayne Watkinson of Calderdale libraries for making available copies of
the Echo which because of their delicate condition are not available to
the public. These revealed some important details of the founding and
development of Lightcliffe Golf Club. I would also like to thank the
directors of the Halifax Golf Club (Ogden) for allowing me to précis
information from their history Lightcliffe to Ogden 1895–1995.
Progress was slow and frustrating, so I was very grateful when Rose
Pickles offered to help with the research. Rose’s family are steeped in
the history of the club and her god-father was Eric Denham. Sadly, Eric
was not well at the time. However, Rose did arrange two meetings prior
to his death, which resulted in a significant surge in our progress as he
supplied us with a selection of news cuttings, some background stories,
photographs and an old Green committee minute book, which was quite
enlightening! I generously acknowledge Rose’s research and chapter
on the Ladies section, and the support and encouragement of many
members of the club who have provided ‘snippets’ of information in
one form or another.
Due to the lack of detailed accounts of the club’s history, particularly in
the 20’s and 30’s, the book has been compiled and written in specific
chapters and not as a chronological history. I can record that all
minutes available to us have now been correlated. Fortunately, we have
members who are hoarders and they were kind enough to release their
ollections of several years’ worth of minutes which were missing. I
am most grateful and I believe so are their wives! We have been most
fortunate to have a club member, Graham Lawley, who is the CEO of a
publishing/printing company and his guidance and generous assistance
in production of the book is much appreciated.
The plans of the course and drawings of the Clubhouse in their various
stages are the work of Jeff Tattersfield. Jeff’s attention to detail and
acquired knowledge of both facets helped considerably when the
chapters on these topics were being compiled, and I am most grateful
to him.
I am indebted to a journalist friend for proof reading the manuscript
and his invaluable comments. My sincere thanks go to Jack Denham,
our senior retired President. He very kindly agreed to read the
proof and comment on the content. I could not have had a more
knowledgeable scrutinizer.
