THE COURSE

The present layout take into account many of the natural features of the land within it is set. Tree planting in the last twenty years or so have ensured that, even with the advend of modern technology. Lightcliffe GC stills remains a good test of golf even for the longest hitters.

The greens are a good test of ones putting ability and with their tricky borrows, questions will be asked of the best players. The Course Record off 66 (Amateur & Professional) is testament to the difficult of Lightcliffe, and visitors are often surprised by the challenge of a course measuring only 5810 Yards.

Lightcliffe golf course for magic golf.

Hole 1   Hole 2   Hole 3

1st Hole Par 3
This is a comfortable start to your round of golf, downhill and just 155 yards from the back tees. A bunker on the right protects the gree and if you are big left you will have to chip over a small bank. The green is very receptive, through over the years, a few testing borrows have developed.

2nd Hole Par 4
A slight dogleg left to right and the second longest hole on the course at 413 yards. The drive is all-important as, if you are not straight, trees cold well block out your second shots. The green is protected by a bunker on the right and the ground falls away on the left down a steep hill. On this green it is said that all putts fall to the stream.

3rd Hole Par 4
On the card, this hole, at 368 yards, seems innocuous though it is one of the hardest holes on the course. A long accurate drive is required, followed by equally accurate second shot over a small stream and onto a very tricky green. Come away with a par here and you will feel very happy.

Hole 4   Hole 5   Hole 6

4th Hole Par 4
A tight left to right dogleg this hole is the shortest par 4 on the course and one, which gives the bigger hitters a choice. Go for the green over a larger expanse of woodland, around 250 yards carry is required, or play safe to the top of a small hill and have a short iron into the green.
Take the wrong option here and score could easily be lost. The green slopes form back to front and any downhill putt is difficult.

5th Hole Par 4
A long par 4 with a slight left to right dogleg. With the lay of the land, it is important that you approach this hole from the left hand side of the fairway, so you are hitting your second into the slope. Too far left, however and thick rough cold well hinder your progress. No bunkers on this hole but the green has acquired some very tricky borrows over the year.

6th Hole Par 3
This is the longest of the two par 3's at 162 yards. The back to front sloping green is one of the biggest on the course and is protected by bunkers on the left and front edges. This allows many tricky pin positions to be chosen.

Hole 7   Hole 8   Hole 9

7th Hole Par 4
This is a short par 4, only 313 yards, which is slightly uphill and shares a green with the last hole. The tee shot, as at the 3rd hole, is all-important and a driver is not usually the best club to take here. Too far and you are in trouble too short and you may not be able to get up. The back to front sloping green is protected on the front right by a bunker.

8th Hole Par 4
This is a straight forward par 4 of 388 yards. The hole is made a little tricky as most balls hitting the fairway bounce left towards a new tree plantation, so you may be cut off from going for the green. Aim further right and you could be in thick rough. There is a bunker protecting the front left of the green, which slopes from front to back.

9th Hole Par 4
This is the longest hole on the course at 427 yards all uphill and is rated the most difficult hole at Lightcliffe. The tee shot is crucial as if you are left or right of the fairway in the rough, there is a strong possibility you will be in trees and will not be able to reach the green.
Even a long drive on the left of the fairway could see you being blocked out by a large tree. If you hit your second (third?) left, there is another large tree just shot of the green and a bunker to contend with. The green is shared with the seventh, though it does not have the slopes or undulations of that, or any other green, on the course.
